Yard woes

So for those of you who don’t know, about two months ago Sean and I started work on what will hopefully be a veggie garden. We plotted and looked and decided right in the middle of the back yard is where it would have to go. We don’t have a lot of room and we have 4, almost 5, trees (one is two right next to each other, so I’m not sure if it is really two or just one :) ). Anyway we pulled up the grass and started digging. You’ll remember that we had some rock problems and had to invite some awesome friends over to help with the situation. It ended up taking the better part of a day and a jack hammer. Crazy stuff.

Then we went to the garden store and bought them out of dirt, compost, peat, and some extra stones. I say bought out, but really we just bought a lot. This is Sean after he and two guys loaded our friends truck. Thank goodness for friends with a truck. Aaron and Monica, and their truck, have come to our rescue quite a few times. It is good to have such an awesome community of friends. Well anyway here’s Sean and the loaded truck. :)

Well we got it all home and started on filling the big hole left by the ginormous rock the guys had made smaller. We then called it quits for the day. That was Saturday.

Then Sunday we we decided we couldn’t look at the leaves any longer. Five gardening bags later we had about 80% of the leaves up. We enjoyed the rest of the afternoon by going to Half Price for the book sale. We deserved it after all. Then yesterday Sean got out there for about an hour and started laying stone. This morning I tried to pick up where he left off. I’m not as good at laying brick but got pretty far. While out there yesterday we discussed how all the trees in our back yard really needed to come out. Except the Crepe Myrtle. Reason being, the one sort of two tree is really close to the back porch over hang. I’m sure ten years ago as babies they… it looked great. Now it is starting to scratch the side of the over hang and could eventually cause major damage. I believe the one maybe two tree is an oak. Then there is a Mexican Plum on the other side of the porch doing the same thing. While a beautiful tree. Not in a good place, and not movable at this point due to size. Last is another Mexican Plum that is in the corner, but is dying. Well dead now. It had a huge fire ant bed in it. This is where Sean may kill me.

We had said we would cut it down… eventually. While having trouble laying stone I decided I would go ahead and cut ‘er down. I don’t think he’ll be too up set about that, but after I cut down the 12 foot three and removed a few branches from the other Mexican Plum in the same area I realized something… That’s the best place for our veggie garden. Without the tree there, and once the other is gone, there will be so much more sunlight for our garden. Here are some photos so you can sort of see what I mean by a better spot… and why he might kill me.

Well I guess sometimes the best laid plans have to change. :) I just hope he is in a good mood when he gets home from work today. Happy Tuesday friends and family!
