Rain!
Well it’s been miserably hot here the last week. Hot enough that I’ve even complained, and I kind of like the hot Texas summers. I know I shouldn’t admit that but it’s really not so bad. I mean you get really long summer days, warm weather, low humidity here in Austin, what more could you ask for. But we’ve gone over 104 about five times in the last week and that was just the actual temperature. It felt more like 110! I’ve put up some photos of my poor plants that just fried in the heat. However today we found relief in the form of rain. The plants already look happier. I know my Canadian born husband was almost too excited when he heard it start to thunder this morning.
I took some photos a few weeks back before everything started to melt.
Our balcony garden has been pretty awesome this summer. We’ve had okra and herbs a plenty. I was also able to get lavender and gladiolas to grow in a pot, and the gardening store people told me it wasn’t possible. I showed them! I guess I inherited a bit of my mom’s green thumb after all. Of course we’ve also had weird mushroom issues. Some how I keep having clusters of mushrooms show up every few days. I’ll figure that out sooner or later.
Well it’s been a while since we’ve posted anything. I think in the sheer relief of knowing Sean had a job we spent the last month just soaking it up. His job is going well. He’s been really busy and there are days when I don’t get to see him except for the “bye” in the morning and the “goodnight” before bed. I’m just glad that he is enjoying most of what he’s doing, and he still has time for a few fun things. He’s been helping with a board game meetup group. So every other Wednesday you can find him parked at Opal Divines in South Austin with a bunch of people playing some new board game. He has also been hanging out quite a bit with our friend David doing the same thing. I’m just glad he has ways to unwind. Due to the heat he has had to put off cycling a bit, poor guy just can’t take it.
I, on the other hand, have been trying to keep up with school. I’m getting a paralegal certificate. I’m looking to finish by the end of next year. Hopefully I’ll be able to find a part-time or full-time job before then though. I’ve also started taking Spanish as well. Maybe I can convince Sean we need to go to Spain so I can practice this new skill.
Either way I’m really enjoying what I’m learning. I’m still volunteering where I can and trying to keep up with the two meetup groups that I run. I’ve been enjoying doing that more and more. I think it’s because so many people have gotten involved recently.
As for other fun things this last month… well we celebrated our two year anniversary of marriage. Originally we had thought of going out for a fancy dinner, but that hasn’t been our style too much lately. So we ordered in some awesome pizza (Home Slice) and curled up on the couch and watched some ‘Survivor Man.’ It was a nice day and a good way to celebrate two years. I think the two year marker should be pizza not paper.
It’s still hard to believe that we’ve been married two years and friends for ten… how the time goes by.
We also went berry picking as Sweet Berry Farm with our couples group. It was a warm day but there were lots of blackberries to choose from. I made a grunt cobbler with them. Sean reminded me after a serving, or two, that part of the reason he loves me so much is because we both love good food. We also had friends over for crepes and board games a few weeks back. I was again reminded by my husband how awesome my cooking skills are. The old saying about the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach truly applies in our situation. We’ve also gone to a few potlucks and I took a sewing class. All in all a busy but satisfying month.
We’re looking forward to this weekend. We’re going to celebrate the 4th a bit low-key by hanging shelves and making homemade ice cream. We’ve also got my 27th birthday coming up in a few weeks. I have a feeling my hubby is up to something, but I’ll try to stay out of it and just wait for the surprise. I’ll let you know what he does!
